Health Care

Located within the community of Elliot Lake is St. Joseph's General Hospital, a 58 bed accredited facility with medical, surgical, obstetrical, pediatric, chronic care facilities and a 24 hour emergency department. Other services in place include a nurse practitioner laboratory, x-rays, ultrasound, radiology, physiotherapy, speech pathology, social services, chiropody, occupational therapy, clinical dietitian counseling and 24 hour pastoral and palliative care.

An ambulatory care unit runs Monday to Friday and consists of day surgery, specialists clinics, diabetes education, chemotherapy, cardiac rehabilitation, and out-reach programs. Medical staff provide 24-hour coverage and include 15 general practitioners and two general surgeons. A helicopter provides emergency transfers to other centres.

Specialists from out-of-town provide clinics on a monthly or as needed basis. These services include: internal medicine, gastroenterology, gynecology, cardiology, ophthalmology, urology, nephrology, dermatologist, cardiovascular surgery, psychiatry, pediatrics and otolaryngology (ear, nose, throat.) These services reduce the need for travel to larger urban centres.

The community of Elliot Lake is equipped with facilities to provide a continuum of care, from acute hospital care, to Hillside Park, a retirement home; Huron Lodge, an assisted living residence; as well as long term care in St. Joseph's Manor, our new 64-bed nursing home. For those requiring care and assistance in their own residence, home care services of all types are readily available through a variety of private and public agencies.

Our community is also served by a full complement of medical professionals and services including 2 optometrists, 1 optician, 7 dentists, 1 denturist and 2 chiropractic clinics.

There are a number of specialized health care suppliers and services within the city. Several services offer safety and convalescent aids, oxygen services, medical supplies, valet services and home care. There are a number of agencies that deal with emotional support and counseling services as well as substance abuse counseling.
